The Different Styles of Home Espresso Machines

The Different Styles of Home Espresso Machines

There are a few different styles of espresso machines for use at home. These are not certified for commercial use and produce lower volumes of coffee than a commercial or professional machine. Home use espresso machines are great if you just want the convenience of being able to make a latte in the morning but don’t ever need it to serve larger numbers of people. These machines should not be used commercially because they are not NSF, ETL, or UL certified. Among the many styles one has to choose from when purchasing home espresso machines is the historical lever espresso machine, the semi-automatic, fully automatic, pod, super automatic, and the ultra-automatic.

The Lever Machine

A lever style espresso machine is the classic machine that has been used for centuries to prepare espresso and tends to be preferred by coffee aficionados worldwide. This type of machine works by building steam pressure with the use of a lever. These are not pump driven machines and require quite a bit of manual labor to operate, but the end result is incredibly tasty.

The Semi-Automatic Espresso Maker

These espresso makers are more of the style used in modern coffee shops around the country. They employ a pump to operate, but you can turn it on and off to control the amount of water that goes into the shot. These machines have steamer wands for frothing milk and a handles filter to hold ground coffee.

The Fully-Automatic Espresso Machine

Much like the semi-automatic, these machines work with a pump, but the amount of water that flows through to create a shot is predetermined. With this style you simply put the coffee in the filter and push a button. This style of espresso machine will produce a consistent espresso shot almost every time.

Pod Espresso Makers

These are super convenient and easy to operate machines that use a prepackaged pod instead of a filter to hold the coffee. There is very little mess involved and you can have a fresh shot of espresso with the touch of a button.

Super Automatic and Ultra Automatic Espresso Makers

These nifty espresso makers are almost fully automated. The super automatic integrates a coffee bean grinder that will grind the perfect amount of coffee and pack it into the filter for you. With this style a push of the button does the grinding, packing, extraction, and dumping of the coffee grounds. With the Ultra Automatic version, the machine will also steam or froth the milk and add it the drink in the same action.
